Town Centre and Waterfront
The Partnership believes that the Pier Head should be classed as part of the Town Centre and indeed offers a fantastic opportunity to expand the Town Centre. Whilst the Pier Head requires comprehensive development, the emphasis in the Town Centre and the rest of the Waterfront will be on incremental change and improvement. In particular, some early stage projects will include
- A programme of events to energise the Town Centre and improve the overall Helensburgh experience for residents and visitors alike. This would include provision for farmers markets, continental markets and local festivals.
- A Public Realm scheme to improve the appearance of the Westbay Esplanade. Helensburgh’s seafront promenade is attractive but would benefit from upgrading. It is one of the first places that visitors see when arriving in the town. The Public Realm scheme could incorporate improvements to traffic along Clyde Street.
- A Traffic Management scheme for the Town Centre which will aim to strike a better balance between vehicles and pedestrians, with the emphasis being in favour of the latter
- A Retail Strategy for the Town Centre which will seek to identify ways of improving Helensburgh’s shopping offer in accordance with the Retail Study prepared by Colliers CRE.
The Partnership’s intention is to work with Argyll & Bute Council to prepare a Development Brief for the Town Centre and Waterfront. This document will guide and encourage development across the whole area and will be subject to community consultation and engagement.
